grandparents passed and I inherited the coins. not many. mostly generic indian heads and some silver. I have a full set of Lincoln wheat pennies myself. but this one stood out for sure. looked like a large date to me. I'm curious what would this be graded? unfortunately, it has a couple of bends in it. the H is smashed. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by themetallurgist 08/08/2014 10:46 pm

From the angle of the photo, I am not convinced that it is the Large 5 variety. A better photo taken vertically will confirm the variety. The size of the numeral 7 appears more consistent with the Small Date variety. But again, at present this is inconclusive. The grade is F 12, perhaps 15.

Fine details at best... 'a couple of bends' will kill any chance of an other than details grade.

With the "right touch"..it can easily be straightened..and left completely unmarked in the process.

Does appear to be small date. Can you expand on the "right touch" please DEVLEC ? I have a few otherwise nice Victoria's that could use an unbending.

not sure of his method but I use a wooden dowl with a small piece of foam and I lay the coin on a flat piece of wood that is covered with a pice of plastic...Then with a few soft taps using a hammer on the dowl the coin gets better without any marks at all

Small date by me observations. It can easily be straightened out, with little evidence. Nice key date silver five!

I've tried with an anvil, two pieces of leather, a 1 inch steel rod, and a dead blow hammer. No satisfactory results yet, too soft a blow the coin looks straightened, too hard a blow the design starts to mush. How do you do it? Maybe I'll try artdio's method with wood dowel.

I havent tried this but perhaps a nice slow flattening with 2 pieces of leather and a good strong and flush vice, maybe.

being flattened doesn't help, but it's looking like a small date to me.
