Wanted to hear everyone's stories. Have you ever found a really nice coin in a coin roll, picked up a coin on the cheap and it turns out to be valuable.

I managed to get a MS65 1920 small cent for 50 cents.

Congratulations. Nice find.
Is it graded red or brown?
A red graded coin is worth a lot more.

About a year ago I picked up a job lot of 20 coins or so, all for $5. There were a couple of pieces I wanted, so it seemed like a good deal to me. There was a nice red 1964 penny in there too, and to my surprise when I was checking it out at home I found that it was a rotated die coin of 160 degrees! That was a nice score for me.

Best find was a 1973 LB $0.25 from a Specimen set. I think I paid around $20 for the full set, was quite surprised when I opened it up.

Check out my thread of swap meet finds. The majority of them I got for anywhere from 10 cents to a dollar.

I picked up a lot of silver coins at an auction. Turned out there was a platinum one mixed in as well, the platinum was worth more then the rest of the lot on it's own.

I try to pick up stuff at face from banks, so if I find something good, it's always a bargain. Two of my best finds are the Devil's Face dollar bill and a 1967 50 cents , both are EF.

I bought this coin on ebay in a PCGS MS64 holder. It was priced about 60% of the price of three other examples listed and graded the same. It looked so good when I got it I sent it in and it upgraded to a MS65.

It's not really a buy, but 2 years ago I went to the bank to get some 1 cents to roll search. In the rolls I got, there was a roll of 5 cents mixed in. In that roll of 5 cent, I found a 1964 extra water line.

I purchased a lot of mixed world coins and tokens at a flea market 21 years ago. Paid about 15.00 for the lot of about 2 pounds worth. I didn't go through them with a catalogue for about 5 years and when I did there were 3 Isle of Man 5 New Pence coins dated 1972, 1973 and 1974. Each are UNC and have a mintage of only 1000 coins each. KM#22. These are still my rarest coins that I have. (based on known mintage numbers)

Found 4 1953 5 cent mules in a bag of 400 1953/1954 mixed nickels....bought them for about 5.00 per roll.

Got an 1881 triple punched large cent in a lot of mixed large cents......not sure what is worth but the double punched are somewhat valuable.

Lately its been the foreign junk bin that has been where I have been scoring. Its a local US coin shop so they pretty much just specialize in US coins and silver and gold of course (they have a decent selection of silver bullion from around the world like maple leafs, pandas, kookaburras and koalas and I got a britannia and a armenian noahs ark recently there too). Well they throw all their odds and ends foreign coins in one big foreign junk bin where everything is 20 cents. In the last week I have pulled 4 silver coins from it (1929 UK six pence, 1920 UK florin, 1935 UK half crown and 1994 Mexico 10 Nuevos) and I also grabbed a 1854 Bank of Upper Canada half penny in there as well.
