Found this the other day. Is the same size of a quarter and has the marking on the sides. What could it be? Grandpa had no notes with it, just a coin flip

Is it the same thickness as a normal quarter. What is its weight? If it is thinner than an quarter and under weight, I'm thinking it is a coin that was polished to remove the cladding and now is just showing the copper core. The reeding tells me that it was a normal coin that was struck and now the upsetting is removed, the cladding and all evidence of the devices were removed.

It's called a slug. I've seen several of these before.

Slugs don't have reeding on the outside edge. It was struck because the reeding is there.

I have seen slugs WITH reeded edges. (Completely blank copper slugs with reeded edges.) Exactly why they ere made that way I don't know. My only guess was to pass them in rolls. They would probably work in vending machines as well but there would be no reason to give them the reeded edge in that case. And these were seen back in the years before video games came out so tat wouldn't be what they were for. (Although they would work in them.)

The newer (after the 70's anyway:) slugs that are made
have reeded edges. Only way that they will work in vending machines etc.
I had a bunch of quarter size slugs left over from the 70's and tried them at the car wash. No cigar or car wash :) Those had smooth edges and they used to work just great back then but no more.
