Just found this 1857 Seated quarter. Not really sure what is going on with it? Does not look like PMD to me. Rim has no reeding in the area of the anomaly.

I would guess that some grease or dirt accumulated to clog the dies.

The foreign material must have been been in a large enough lump to fill up both dies simultaneously.

I don't see how a 'gradual' buildup of gunk could have created this peculiarity since the flattened area of the rim is located directly between the affected areas in question on both the obv. and rev.

IMO

I think it's been Struck Through Grease with a little wear contributing also.

Struck through either foreign object, or grease on the die.

Brought it in to the pharmacy today and weighed it ----5.935 Grams----should be 6.22----could wear account for a 4.5 % loss? That seems like a lot.

very possible considering the age of the coin and the amount of hands that must have handled it through the ages...
