Well, it came back 64. I was 98% sure it was coming back 65. I cracked it out of a small ANACS 64 holder and sent it in to PCGS. Some of you might recognize/remember it.
I WANT that 65. (Funny what the TPGs have done to me . . . ) Two months ago I found reasons not to dip it before I sent it in. Now I don't give a rat's behind.
So, as regards my chance at a 65 ONLY. Would a dip help or hurt my chances?

Try acetone first. If that doesn't work then dip.

TPGs will realize your coin was dipped for sure.

Acetone will have no effect on this coin.

There are thousands of dipped coins in TPG holders. They can only tell if you don't do it properly. In this case, I'm starting to think those are carbon spots and not toning. Dipping may not work.

Rather than take the chance, I'd probably sell it and buy a 65, if that's what you must have.

Keep in mind there is a huge difference between cleaning and conservation. If conservation is done properly, the result is a market acceptable coin.

Thanks for the replies.
Thad, I take your point about carbon spotting. I had actually not considered that, I was thinking it is toning. I.will look at it hard with that in mind when I get back to my desk.
Yes, I could buy a 65. But what fun is that? I believe I already have a 65 and now it is the principal of the thing. I carefully selected this one in an old ANACS holder because I believed it to be undergraded. Principals . . . . principals I say!!
Junjun, Dar, the TPGs do seem to be somewhat forgiving with a light dip on silver, and as Brad said, if done properly and rinsed thoroughly they cannot know.
Here is one that I did a dip on not too long ago, you might find it interesting: https://goccf.com/t/165558&whichpage=2
I have some time, it will be a while before I get another submission together (I just got this one back) so look forward to perhaps so more responses.
And I will try to see if those are carbon spots or toning. Hmmmmm, I suppose I need to know how to do that.

Well, didn't take long to find that consensus (or at least it sounds right to me) is that "Carbon Spots" is somewhat of a misnomer. That carbon spots on silver is simply an advanced stage of toning.
Etched too deep to dip off.
Any disagreement?
Still have not looked at the coin in question. Will do that tonight.

Yes, black toning is the final stage. At that point, the surfaces under the spots are toast. If you do remove them, you still have surface spots and it will look cleaned.

GOOD LUCK

Thank you Brad,
I am trying my best to eliminate luck from the equation.
Though I believe your response to be sincere best wishes!

And . . . . . those spots are scary. Very dark with sharp edges.

Versus what I don't know, I don't have much to compare them to.

Best blow up I can manage below.

What say the gallery?

Got plenty of time today . . . .

I can compare with the aforementioned 35-S.

This is interesting . . . .

Before. Very similar, though perhaps not quite as dark.

Scroll below for similar after pic.

After. Certainly there are ghosts where the marks were. Easily visible under 10-X eyeware. Though without the "before" photo perhaps not as obvious as to what the ghosts are.
And yet it graded a 63.

Thoughts?

I agree with the above reply that if you MUST have an MS-65 that I'd sell this coin as it stands in the TPG holder and use the proceeds toward a pre-graded MS-65 coin.

Dipping won't help that coin. Get it CACed if you think it's a 65 and sell it.
