She sure is pretty. The photos almost capture the color. Almost.
I do believe it is MS, I can see no luster breaks on the ear or breast.
There is something going on on the reverse. Maybe a lamination. Anyone have thoughts on that? It is a bit out of my depth.
Will the flaw on the reverse keep it from grading? I see graded coins from time to time with "Lamination" on the holder.
I hope to get it in a holder, what do you guys think of it?

Turning under the lights to try better to show the color.
The color goes around quite a ways, but I can only capture a bit at a time.
I suppose it is time to get some jansjos and some smile directors.
This one is straight out of the camera. Cropped it and flipped it (it was shot upside down) only.

Didn't like the photos.
Moved my aperture from 5.5 to 8.
Leveled the coin using the mirror trick.
Reset the white balance.
Shot these at 40 shutter.
Verified I am at 100 ISO
Not much better, if I expose it long enough to capture the dark areas, the face is overexposed creating that monstrous hot spot basically all over the portrait. Anyway, I like them a little bit better. The reverse is coming around a bit.
Maybe tomorrow night I speed up the exposure a bit more, but it has been a long day.
Still no one wants to play?

Why thank you Dar!! Good to meet you!
I usually get a good response to these, so I really can't complain.

The new pictures help, I can see die polish lines instead of hairlines. Nice luster, I would call it MS64. TPGs do not seem to have consistent treatment of laminations but they will not usually slab large flappers due to the chance of it breaking off during the sealing process.

Ok... now I'm not first lol. I was debating whether or not it was cleaned too but I've also seen alot of that variable direction flowing on plenty of gem graded washingtons from this era... On this one, it seems to stay in the fields so maybe it's original? I'm starting to lean that way. But then again, there looks like hairlines on the eagle now. I don't find the coin attractive myself and can't comment on the lamination aspect other than that it usually doesn't command a premium. I'll call it a dog for the grade in 63 or 62...maybe cleaned.

Boxer's cut on the eye, a hit on the eagles leg. That's about it for hits.
I didn't shoot fresh pics tonight, but I know there is detail that I am missing.
Maybe tomorrow night.
Maybe I speed up the shutter enough to capture the portrait without overexposing it, and we already have the fields and rims. Sort of a composite.
Thanks guys for the replies!

Dang Jesse, don't hold back! I am becoming more of a fan of the early toned coins. This one is not spectacular in my eyes, but I do like it. Let's say I don't dislike it.
Anyway, shot some pics @ 125 shutter.
Straight out of the camera, no lighting retouched. Quite dark, but shows the portrait a bit better.
Starting to show marks that I can't see with 10-X . . . .
I gotta go to work in a couple hours . . . . . this stuff is keeping me up at night.

Jon, you had me laughing. I know I come off as a son of gun. I know you have a thick skin like this coin though!

Well, it is off to see the wizard. Should have a grade in a few weeks.

I am expecting a no problem "63". If it does pull a "64" then it is happy dance time. I think I have a shot, depending on how the wife treated the grader over the weekend.

I actually fumbled it whilst getting it into the flip and it landed on the soft desktop but took off running toward my steel painted camera stand. Climbed right up on it, the only hard surface within twenty feet. Bumped into the pedestal that I put the coins on for photography and then did that "roll around and fall over spinning and spinning and making horrible silver noises for what seemed like 20 minutes thing."

I can't believe I actually did that . . . . . didn't hurt it too bad, but did put a tiny bit of extra "insult" to the ear. I suppose as it spinned (spun?) on down to flat on the hard metal. Now the metal right where that carbon spot is (or whatever that black spot is) is missing a bit of tone. It will probably get a no grade . . . . for "spinning". I am sure they have a code for that.

Not a good feeling . . . . gotta remember to put a towel or something on the desk next time.

I had my gloves on, and makes me wonder if I would have fumbled it if I had not had them on.

I promise I will post the results.

Thanks to all that played along . . . . well thanks to everyone except Jesse. Jesse doesn't get a Christmas card this year!

Just kidding Jesse!

I see a long, thin vertical scratch behind the portrait plus small hits on the eagle's legs. There is a shallow groove down Washington's neck that might also indicate some post-mint impact. Color looks original, luster seems strong. Lamination seems like the most likely explanation for the odd reverse feature.

I would be comfortable with an "MS-63, reverse lamination" grade and MS-64 might be possible. Overall, an attractive MS example of this scarcer date.

Well, only took two months but I finally got it back.
MS63 just like most of us expected. Myself included, though I was hoping for a 64. You know what they say, hope in one hand . . .
No "Details-Spinning" thank goodness.
I do like it better than my bright white 63 that I currently have, so I am going to swap them out.
Well, no home runs this time, but sure is fun!!
Thanks to everyone who played along!
Jon
