I recently won and auction for a red and brown 1928-S Lincoln Cent. Here are the photos from the auction.

I was rudely shocked when the package arrived today and this is what was in it:

I've emailed the seller, who does offer a 14 day return. I haven't heard back from him/her yet. I've never had a "bait and switch" pulled on me buying on ebay and hope this was an honest mistake. I just had to vent for a minute. Thanks for giving me a forum to do so.

Sorry that happened to you, Paul. I don't think it was a mistake since the coin you got was the same date but in lower grade.

I would insist that the seller reimburse you for postage both ways.

If the seller had multiple 1928 S auctions, they may have just mixed them up. I try to give most people the benefit of the doubt, at least initially. Most people on ebay are honest, believe it or not.

Yea I would be a little upset but give them a chance..I've done business on ebay for years and only once did I not receive my purchase and they made it good; so no complaints with them. As far as dealers I have had errors in my shipments and have had them made good and postage paid both ways by them so be patient and see what happens. If not complain to ebay.

Yep, agree, and definitely don't pay for return shipping.

I heard back from the seller. She said they goofed and sent the coin I won to the auction winner of another 1928-S Lincoln Cent, a winner who now won't send the coin back.

They've offered me a refund on the coin and return shipping (it was free shipping in the auction).

While it seems strange to me that they would have already have had time to contact the other person and find out they weren't going to return the coin (the seller emailed me back in less than an hour), I don't think that I really have any other options other than return the coin for a refund.

Any suggestions on other options than simply returning the coin?

I can't prove that this is anything other than an honest mistake, but hate losing such a nice coin won at a very favorable price.

Sorry this had to happen to you. I have had similar experiences with certain sellers on ebay.

Classic bait and switch.

There really isn't much you can do besides returning the coin. What I would do is keep the coin you got, get rid of that gunk with some acetone, and keep it as a reminder that ebay sellers can be dishonest. Enjoy your collecting.

Isn't that like a $2-3 coin in that grade? I'm surprised they want it back. I had a seller who sent me the wrong $5 value coin and they decided paying return shipping would cost them half that so they just told me to keep it along with sending me the right coin. If I was the seller, I'd just refund your money and tell you to keep it as a token of apology.

You have no options other than to send it back -- or keep it and accept a partial refund. The so-called buyer he sent it to by mistake is not part of your transaction and he can do what he wants.

Other than returning, you don't really have any other options. At least they are willing to pay return shipping.

Most honest sellers would refund your money and tell you to keep the coin... I am skeptical it was an honest mistake when they expect you to package the coin and return it.

I don't think you would have been happy even if you had received the coin pictured in the auction. That "red and brown" Lincoln looks a lot to me like a retoning dipped coin.

I played around in ebay for a bit looking for those two auctions and came up empty. Before you give your seller feedback, see if she did indeed sell the coin you received in another auction. That would lend credibility to her story.

Google reverse image searches were also fruitless for me.

Good luck in the future.

I had the same thing happen to me once. Seller took the coin back. You'd think that any time, someone lists two similar coins, they'd mark the flips with the auction number.
