....long story short: Have been wanting to search some penny rolls, but not thrilled with bank tellers, and I'm a bit lacking in social skills. BUT with my six year old at my side for moral support :-), we walked into our bank with 10 rolls of pennies, and exchanged them for 10 rolls. It was fun! Can't wait to look through them with him. Yes, I know they aren't technically "pennies," but on the sides of all the rolls it says "pennies." Go figure

I get sometimes get nervous asking for rolls of coins too. Have you been trying to get your son/daughter hooked on collecting?

Go in with friendly confidence and ask for a box. No real social skills needed. At worst, they'll tell you they don't have enough to sell you a box. Remember they aren't generally looking to be confrontational. Just make sure you dump them somewhere else.

Edweather, you said, Quote: BUT with my six year old at my side for moral support :-), we walked into our bank with 10 rolls of pennies, and exchanged them for 10 rolls. It was fun! Can't wait to look through them with him. This was a part of your post. WOW! Your completed post is a true use in honesty. What a great opportunity to teach. At six, just to focus in on the coins distinctions, to recognize numbers would be amazing! Good for you Dad! I'm retired K-8 teacher. And still willing to learn.

Thanks all. It'll be a while before we go through them. Looked at a couple of roll last night, nothing exciting but a few 1983s...looking for DDR. His excitement is waning because we almost have the book filled. Kinda tough to keep a 6 year olds attention if nothing is happening. Will re-energize him with a jar of wheats I have, and an empty album....that should do the trick

Just a word of advice, try not to trade rolls for rolls. A 10 count is not bad, but if you rolled up in there with say $15+, you might get a cold shoulder. A bag of Hersey's Kisses every couple of months for the tellers really goes a long, long way if you are a regular. They may start saving stuff just for you. Has always worked for me.

If you don't trade rolls for rolls, what do you do with your searched pennies?

Most of us have a bank we "dump" all the coins we don't want at like I take all my change to one bank then go to 3-4 other banks to buy more coins keeps me from going through the same stuff I just got done searching

So when you say dump, you just take a bag of raw pennies and the bank puts them into a change counter, and then gives you the cash?

You can find multiple threads on here specifically talking about just "dump banks"
You dump all your rolled coins at one bank and you ask for rolled coins at a different bank.
Never dump in the same bank you ask for the rolls.
A lot of people live by this^^^^^^^^

Quote: If you don't trade rolls for rolls, what do you do with your searched pennies? Spend two at a time on lottery tickets, or a newspaper, or at the grocery store with that snotty cashier that always has an attitude with you no matter what and for no reason. I am down to less than 3 boxes right now and they are slowly going away. Sometimes I am lucky and able to trade a searched box for an unsearched one, just depends on how the head teller feels they will use them that week and if they will need a sealed box or if they will need to open one anyway.

Thanks for all the help and support. I realize I might be putting the cart before the horse with the 'dump' question. We have accounts at 3 banks locally, and there are others around. It will be a slow feeling-out process as to what we can and cannot do. I know they won't let us exchange rolls for rolls if we don't have an account. I'm just happy we were able to get some new pennies to search, and the process has begun. The best part is that my son enjoys messin' with coins

I always try to do other banking first, then ask them for whatever I want, usually telling them that me and my son enjoy searching through them to fill our books...which is 100% true. Helps to flirt with the bank teller lady a little bit too.....and it works every time!!
