Has anyone ever heard of a 12 Caesars' set being sold in its entirety?
It seems as though this is a popular collecting goal, and a number of collectors have been lucky enough to have achieved this; however, no-one seems to actually have one for sale. I suppose that nobody is willing to part with one...!

There was an earlier thread on approaches to collecting. I've been reading various books about the battles of ancient Greece and Rome... I think that I might try to collect coins related to major battles.

I have seen a sets completed in gold and in silver but I've also not heard of them being sold. This could be because these set sell at high end auction or to private collectors that I'm not aware of.

I just found an old auction from 2003 of 12 aurei:

https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=27912

That set sold for $30,000. I'm guessing that the value would have gone up significantly since then though...

edit:

I just found a second set, that sold more recently (and for much more):

http://www.noble.com.au/auctions/lot?id=233654

This one sold for $110,000.

At the recent World's Fair of Money a dealer had a 12 Caesars set of denari. I don't recall the price but it wasn't completely crazy-- still quite expensive though.

There was a 12 Caesars aurei display too. The WFOM promo pictures did NOT do it justice. Those coins were spectacular... very glad I had the opportunity to see them in person.

Paul - who is James Beach? Is that a coin dealer (I'm a novice...but couldn't find anyone by that name on google at least!).

I have yet to go to a coin show but would love to! I'm close to Toronto, Ontario...I think that there are few in the city each year.
For fun, I've tried searching each of the aurei on ebay to get an idea of what a full set would cost...it came to about 100k, depending on the condition of course. It would be quite an achievement!
I know that there has been a lot of debate before about the investment value of coins, but I'd bet an ultra costly set like the 12 aurei would never depreciate...
