I haven't seen these before--but I would be inclined to get one for the cool erupting volcano. Interestingly, I'm presently on vacation, close to an erupting volcano that looks very similar.

"That is correct Moneditis, the 1817 peso was likely struck in 1818, and after the battle of Maipu in april of 1818 which gave the chilean patriots final control of Santiago, and the of the mint. I stand corrected. The very first issue was, as mentioned, the peso w/o assayers initials and with the 'Y' centered over the column. It is estimated it was only struck for one month before an assayer was found, at which time regular coinage started.".
These are misconceptions. The 1817 FJ, 1817 no assayer and 1817 FD were all struck in 1817, in that sequence. The first Republican crown of Chile is the 1817 FJ Peso.

What I really like about these early Republican Latin American issues is that they look impressive even if circulated. They just have this crudeness in style that does not make you expect a bright and shiny coin with cartwheel luster.
The impression I got from the Lissner sale was that coins brought higher prices if their holder said "MS-64" or even "MS-65", irrespective of the true rarity of the coin. Or, put differently, "MS-65, finest known of the type" sold for a much higher price than "MS-61, finest known of the type" - I personally would expect the price differential to be much smaller. But then, I guess such coins are more likely to end up in the hands of investors who are only interested in the elusive grade on the holder than to be owned by true collectors...

dosmundos : I totally agree ... There are sometime high grade coins which IMHO don't look as nice than lower grade ones (because they got dipped for example, or were not well struck). At least the "wings approved" ones were high grade and nice at the same time :)

Yes, you got yourself the 1st chilean peso. 1817 FJ is the type often encountered, and yours is a very nice one with good detail on the globe and wreath. I guess we all have our reasons for liking latin american coinage - mine is simply that I had the fortune to live in Chile and Peru in my early youth and still fondly remember the friendly people, the beauty of the countryside and the historic towns and haciendas set in steep valleys, with the towering Andes in the background. I may return there one day. The Lissner sale results were a surprise, that is for sure. I guess you guys are right in that the sale attracted investors interested in owning the 'best of a given type'. As for me, I was blown out of the water with my meager bids, but am happy with my Pasco mint 4 reales which I thought was still reasonable. Here is a baby volcano dated 1834, and an 1817 FJ peso.

I think "Volcanoes on Latin American Coins" would be a great topic for an exhibition at a coin show :-)

Definitely a good idea, dosmundos - Latin America is dotted with volcanoes (most of the Americas for that matter). Here is 2 reales from the Central American Republic - another very appealing series of coinage, but I don't know if the mountains portrayed are volcanoes or not. This is my only example.

Has anyone ever seen an example of the Volcano coinage bearing a Chinese chop?
