1971 (S) TONED Ike dollar62 ebay bidders sold for $476.00 That little Eisenhower honey went for more than many MS++ MORGANS --- Forgive me for not having information on the TPG. I do not believe it was graded. Forgive if I am wrong. Anyway, there is hope for sellers of toned Ike dollars.
That is if any sellers want to chance the new ebay return policy. Edited by Domain555 08/14/2014 5:51 pm

I was experimenting a week ago with toning. I heated a morgan to just about red hot using indirect hear, then submerged it in ice water. Came out exactly like the ike pictured

I knew it was kryptonitecomics as soon as I saw the photo. SsuperDdave has stated before that people have mastered a way to tone coins in OGP and/or TPG holders( forgive me if it was someone else, SD). I think this is what we have here. I'm not saying that the seller himself did it, but I think he has a supplier. He has way too many toned 71-S Ikes like this to make me feel comfortable about it being natural toning. Besides, the colors just look too wild and unnatural. Then again, the coin may only look like this at a certain angle. EDIT: I just found the listing, and the reverse toning is a dead give away for the AT verdict. At first I thought that it may have been a Nightcrawler or some other FS variety. Nope. The bidding for this is just insane.

If the coin was AT in the slab afterwards that would be a dead giveaway.

Quote: If this coin is in an NGC or PCGS slab I would suggest checking the cert photo. All the monster toned 71-S Ikes he sells are in OGP. Here is his description: You are bidding on a nice 40% silver proof 1971-S Eisenhower dollar that is government sealed and in uncirculated condition. Beautiful natural rainbow toning on mirrored surface, these coins are commonly referred to as brown box Ikes as they were issued by the government in brown wood grain cardboard boxes (box is not included with this auction). The coin has not been gassed and no chemicals were applied to cause the toning, the toning formed over a few decades of storage in a garage in Florida.. This has been the same description the seller has used on all of these OGP monster rainbow Ikes. But, who knows? Maybe he did acquire a hoard of several hundred or even a thousand of these Ikes from the same person. Actually, I just received a 1903-S Morgan from kryptonitecomics in the mail today- a great coin that was exactly as pictured in the auction. I have no complaints. Still, the toning on this particular Ike just doesn't look right to me. Here are a couple of other 71-S Ikes he has listed: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-S-Silv...em4d221871fchttp://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-S-Silv...em58b39fe91bThoughts?

This is interesting. An Ike like that in the original government holder I've never seen with that kind of toning. If there's any toning it will usually be the kind of haze that you see on the blue box proof sets (1968-1972). You would think that an Ike in the government holder with that kind of toning would have the toning start at the rim and then work inward toward the center. This is generally how the most desirable cartwheel Morgans will work. Ikes do have their core group of followers and do love exotic colors. I don't think that coin is worth nearly $500.00 but I've seen a bigger jackpot than that. An Ike slabbed by PCGS had beautiful light blue cartwheel toning which unlike the coin pictured above was certainly natural. The grade was either MS-65 or MS-66. The date was pre 1976 and If I recall correctly it was either a 1971-D or a 1974-D. The sale price, which was a set price not an auction, just topped five figures.

Translated: The coin has been gassed and chemicals were applied to cause the toning. The toning formed quickly. I have been doing this in a garage in Florida.

This type of AT is an art. The buyer is paying an artist for their work. Being art, no one will ever agree if the artist has skill or dumb luck. Does not matter to me. I do not buy art, I buy coins, but to each their own.

Toned by a few decades of car exhaust fumes in a humid Florida garage? Just a thought.

Toning looks fine to me. Heat and humidity in those old cardboard brown boxes these things came in will do some crazy stuff to coins.
Signed, Bidder who dropped out at $150.
