While going through a box of grandpas coins, I found 9 nickles that have been altered. The face of the indian has been carved into different characters and the reverse buffalo is left alone. What are they? Very very cool I think

These are called "Hobo nickels," and although many modern carved ones exist, yours look contemporary. I just love the sort of "crude" look of these contemporary Hobo nickels.
Can anyone recognize/identify the carver based on the work.....?

I've never seen one engraved into a 1914 like the one shown. I'd hate to think there might be a "D" on the reverse!

I saw a few of these at a coin show I was at recently, pretty cool, but not for $80. I think he was pricing it that way so he could keep it unless someone wanted to pay THAT much

Duncanbishop24, some people pay serious amounts of money for some of these. Just look at finished ebay listings for "Hobo Nickel".

Some of these go for big bucks for just a "damaged" nickel.

There are some very talented Hobo Nickel artists and there works go for some decent $$. I have watched some carvers make these; some very talented people. Cool piece of art.
