I'd have to say the 1793 chain cent in all it's varieties. It was the first production coin to be released from the early mint and as such is an extremely valuable and sought after coin.

For the classics, the Heraldic Eagle with Shield Reverse (1797-1804). If you have never seen one, it is a large and imposing coin, beautiful in its restrained artistry and a tangible link to Federal America.

Amongst the commemorative issues, my vote would be for the 1915 Panama Pacific octagonal $50 gold, a coin unsurpassed in beauty and grandeur, which, alas, I will never own.

Considering modern, circulating coinage, the Jefferson nickel, is an extremely affordable set that can still be assembled from circulation. This series is rich with varieties and condition rarities, sufficient to occupy a lifetime of study and collecting.

Maybe you should put it on a poll and see which one comes out tops?

Too many choices. The poll can only have 15 entries, I couldn't have options for every American coin. Plus I intended this more as a discussion.

As mentioned before the $50 pan pacific gold commemorative. Largest issue gold coin from the US mint, beautiful design, two shapes and minisqual mintage; a great coin that I have had the pleasure to have held and admired.

Saint-Gaudens $20 gold piece. The 1993 penny has more history, but the Staint-Gaudens is gold with a beautiful design.

It has to be this one. It is the actual coin Washington threw across the Potomac river.

If dollars spent collecting or volume of units that change hands equal votes, it would bear arguing that the Morgan dollar or the Double Eagle are the most important coins of U.S. history. Would seem more money changes hands each year in these coins to make them the far and away winner.

The Flying Eagle cent has always been my favorite. I love the short run and the eagle in flight.
