Both of these notes came from circulation. I thought they were really interesting, so I kept them. I doubt they're worth anymore than a dollar, but I thought some of you might enjoy seeing them? Hope so.

Nope their worth a bit more then a buck each! Nice Find! Someone will be along that can give ya a good estimated value. However I am confused as to why there is a smudge mark on the top one

Well, I am no expert, but I have always thought it was because that's where the seal is supposed to go.
Thank you both! t360, I love watching that banana dance. >.>

Do you see how the bottom one is shifted? The black seal is shifted and so are the numbers "4". Thats because when the are printed they are printed together at the same time and in the same position. The top one, the numbers "11" are in the proper spot and the black seal is shifted way over. You also can see a black smuge where the black seal should be. I suspect the error is a fake and someone rubbed the black seal off and stamped on on the other side of the bill. The first one you should keep and wont be worth much. The second one would probably sell on ebay for 10-20 bucks. Ty

Nice finds and I agree with all above. The first looks suspicious. Either way they'd both be keepers in my book.

Very cool find. This is an area of collecting that I have no experience in.
How rare are these types of errors?
For that matter, how rare are any types of note errors?

these errors aren't that rare. But if you get notes missing partial printing, or cutting errors, they can be quite expensive. Look on ebay in the error note section. They have some nice examples there and you can tell which are rarer by the prices they want. Ty

Very interesting. I'm on a mission now, I will find an error note in circulation and post a pic when I do.
Is it more likely to find an error in a stack of circulated bills or a fresh bank stack with sequential serial numbers?

In theory, yes. The more people look through them the better chance you wont find one. However, I bought a $1,000 brick of one dollar notes and didn't find a single star note, let alone an error. Now your going to make me have bad dreams, TSmith. About 3 years ago I worked at Wal-mart as a cashier. I had some crisp new bills in my till. As I was handing a lady like four of the new bills, right as I handed them to her I noticed one was an error note. Not a wimpy shifted printing error, but this baby had something folded wrong and lots of white showing. I hated myself for weeks not asking for it back and giving her a different one. I really could of used that error in my collection. But oh well. Ty

The first bill is definately counterfeit. (The note looks real but the error is counterfeit.) If it was a true error, the Fed seal, the serial numbers, and the Treasury seal would all shift equally. It is impossible for just the Federal Reserve Bank seal to be shifted and not the others. But overall nice notes. Both are keepers.
