Hey guys, I am looking for info for this 8 reale piece that is chomarked. It is the 6th coin on this page: http://www.sedwickcoins.com/silver_cobs_mexico.htmDoes anyone have any info on them like if certain ones are rare and valued among certain collectors and if this is a good buy? Thanks for your help! Aaron

Herm, what are your intentions regarding coins ? Depending on your answer, the "good buy" can have many meanings. That coin is an 8 reales, minted manually in Mexico while it was ruled under spain. Some have chopmarks (they are more common on later milled coins) as those were used all around the world, particularly in Asia. The coin seems salvaged (came from a wreck). History of this one is interesting in any case. As for the seller, it's the specialist of those - no worries.
In any case, I would warmly recommend you to get some books / documentations before even thinking of buying those ;)

It's a good price for an authentic piece of history.
It's badly struck and bent so not of value to a collector. Don't expect it to appreciate in value.

Thanks guys! I went ahead and ordered the coin, I was looking for an 8 reale cob to be able to show everyone and handle on a daily basis if needed and to keep in my pocket on certain occasions and such.
I currently collect shipwreck coins and I do not like anyone touching them, just a pet peeve I guess!
I thought the price was good for an 8 reale piece to be handled often and the chop marks add a really interesting history to it. :)

I carry shipwreck coins in my pocket because I like the heft and clank of silver. Lately it's been Dutch rijders and daalders. You can find them on ebay, or rondomons.nl. Similar quality and prices as your 8 reale.

Do you collect any certain wrecks? I am aiming for an 8 reale from all of my favorite wrecks.

I've deduced a couple of wrecks using Sedwick's book. I have several 4R cobs which are apparently Seville Harbor, and figured out one of the rijders. Both wrecks produced large numbers of coins, so there is no rarity. I have no coins with certificates.

The second one is from Nuevo Reino ? I can't figure it out from what I see :D
Thq : I like that noise / coins in the pocket idea :D A bit better than my fake Chinese cob sitting on my desk :P
