I took my collection of over 60 pieces of contemporary counterfeit bust halves to the local coin shop. The dealer had a "gun" that when you "shoot" the coin, it tells the composition of the coin. I was surprised to see that many of them had silver in them...But the ones after 1935 had NO silver in them... That's about the time when German silver was invented that had no silver. The Feuchtwanger cent of that time period is made of German silver....

Interesting, but don't you mean 1835 not 1935?

It would also make the thread more interesting if you posted the actual reading obtained on the different pieces.

Harvey ... after 1835 ? Good point, Condor.

I seem to recall having read somewhere (Davignon's book?) that the value of silver dropped below the face value in the 1830's.

In 1853, the weight of all silver coins except the Seated Liberty silver dollar was reduced (that's why the arrows at the date), so that it was no longer worth more as bullion.

The lowered value of silver in the 1830's would have enabled counterfeiters to mix modest amounts of that metal with their base metal, I suspect.
