Hey guys. So I was thinking the other day considering that there are tons of silver coins pulled out banks and circulation do you think that within a couple of years CRH may be virtually impossible? CRH has Definetely gotten harder with not as productive boxes as it is. So what do you think?

If you are only CRHing for silver, you may be out of luck, but for those of us looking for NIFC and other such, then it is all still good and fun. I get more excited finding a Canadian cent than a Wheat cent. It all really depends on what you are looking for and who is doing what with what they find. I know I will never have a set of circulated franklins because people melt them down, so not even going to bother with them.

True, while loads of silver ( and copper coins for that matter )are being pulled from circulation I dont think CRH will be virtually impossible (even within the next two years) because those coins that are pulled are not gone forever as some will one day return into circulation -(1) through hoarders running out of space or spare money and then deciding to trim down their collections... (2)unfortunate collectors will be robbed of their collections by thieves, burglars and family members who wont grasp the significance of the coins and will spend them on sweets , beer and cigarettes .... (3) since we wont last forever, those who inherit collections might cash them in at the bank ... The result of those 3 factors above is that there will be pickings (however slim) for those CRH`ers who will put in the time and effort....sure, there will be lean times ahead but with perseverance you will always win again Quote: but for those of us looking for NIFC and other such, then it is all still good and fun

Maybe in the future it will be harder to find silver in circulation, but not impossible.

It's funny you should mention that. We roll hunters asked the same thing back in 1980. I find more silver today than I did in 1980. I bet you wonder why?

FistFulla- I actually am curious to know why. It seems many people have to go through 5 or 6 boxes to get a keeper and have heard others say it has become harder.
Daytr- I agree on some of the points but you also have to think that many of these coins may get lost/ruined or destroyed.
Dan- Sorry I should have been more specific. I meant to say ridiculously hard not impossible.

tchronis, Where do you believe the silver we find CRHing is coming from? When do you believe it was deposited? In other words, when you find a silver dime or half dollar, do you believe it's a coin that's been floating around in a vault for years? Do you believe it was just deposited? Do you believe it was at the back of the Federal Reserve vault?
I'd like to see others answers too. OO

Owass- I think it comes for circulation and just getting pasesed hand to hand. I've checked about 30 dollars change I have in a jar that consists of change gotten from stores and such and pulled 2 silver dimes and one wartime nickel. I checked 100 dollars in dimes the other day from the bank and got nothing. So to answer your question I think most of it is circulating change that people throw in a jar and deposit it at the bank. That's where I think the silver we find now comes from. Had I not just gotten into this hobby we wouldn't have checked the jar and we would've put the silver into circulation. I think as the years pass and more are picked out the silver keeps slimming down. More and more members are seeing this problem and one is even leaving the hobby because of it.

I think some people find loose change in drawers and old money boxes and just spend it or cash it in at the bank, not realising that the coins may be valuable. There's also the odd coin found down the back of a sofa! In the UK I was still finding occasional silver shillings and florins (last minted in 1946) right up to the early 1990s when these denominations were replaced by the small size 5p and 10p. I got a 1980 2p with almost full mint lustre in change just the other day - that surely can't have been changing hands on a day-to-day basis for 34 years!

Yeah I mean don't get me wrong I'm not saying that there won't be some silver making its way around but silver is definitely becoming harder to find

I am not sure, I have ramped up the searching over the past 4 months or so, doing about $3k a week (combined all denoms) just last Saturday, I found 13 silver dimes in a single roll (my personal best) I ended the day with a total of 20 silver dimes.
I have been on a streak for the entire time, getting silver every week, mainly on Saturdays, but I go about it differently, I don't just go and buy a box of dimes from the bank, because in my experience they are about 75% of the time fresh from the mint.
I go and get a block of dimes ($50) or 2 and quarters and nickels (pennies if I am lucky) and move onto the next bank.
I find that it is not just about quantity, but its about Quality of the rolls. if you are always searching or getting the minty fresh coins then your wasting your time/effort.

Now that silver prices are down and stagnant, more hunters (like myself) will quit for awhile. Back in the late 1970's, high unemployment and high silver prices drove many into roll hunting. Silver crashed about 1981, and collections were dumped.
My finds were very slim in 1980, due to all the competition.

The amount of silver going in isn't being reduced by much. The real issue is the number of people searching has doubled or tripled, at least in my area. It's no longer worth the effort... I used to average 3 40% per box and .5 90% per box of halves. Over 20 boxes with 50+ keepers, a personal best of ~200 keepers... those were a few great years of hunting.
