Anyone have guidelines to find out whether alteration in coin (like cleaning) has been done? I am suspicious when I see very bright examples without certification. Any suggestions appreciated.

95% of what your asking in just educating yourself. Get some sort of magnifier, a magnet, and a small digital scale. Look at lots of coins on the Internet and at coin shows to become familiar with what interests you. The magnifier will assist in getting a very close look at the coin.

The other 5% is intuition. If you are suspicious of a coin, chances are you are right and the coin is not what it claims to be.

Good luck and Cheers!

Thanks to all for taking the time. How serious is the deduction of value if coin has been dipped or lightly cleaned?

It all depends on what was used to dip the coin.. and/or how the coin was cleaned...

Better answer to your question may be another question... how has the coin's surface been altered after cleaning?

This ought to be in the Main Coin Forum. In the bullion world this question is not a concern. But to answer your question, start looking at coins in each grade condition, as with "PCGS Photograde" (search engine this). That way you'll be able to see why a shiny "G" is polished/cleaned/or dipped.
