The reverse has a pattern on the edge by the wheatears.

The obverse may be a grease filled or polished to remove a clashed die.

The details appear to sharp to be a worn obverse die.

The reverse is PMD.

The reverse scraped against something to cause the marks.

Close up may reveal more...it's interesting to see. Also look a the two raised areas east of the eye and the cut into the orbital.

Looks like the ear was scraped off poor Abe. ( You can see metal striations on the lobe, indicating something removed it.
