I found this one in a roll a while ago.

Unfortunately it has porous surfaces and you can only see the 1 and the 7.

That was my first thought as well but the one pictured on PCGS Coinfacts website has a full N

http://www.coinfacts.com/small_cent...__copper.htm

I have tried to compare the position of the bottom feather to determine if it was after 1886 or before but I can;t tell without the motto.

Strong N, no way unless it's a proof.

Verily sure the first number is a 1. And yes the last one looks like a 7. Now if we think of all the possibilities, the middle two numbers could be almost anything. This means you could have a 1997, 1007, 1237, 1817, etc. In other words without an electron microscope, just to difficult to tell.

Actually there are only 5 possibilities.

1867, 1877, 1887, 1897, or 1907.

If I could determine the position of the feathers / motto it would make it either 2 possibilities or 3 possibilities.

No. It has a bold "n" and the date curves.

If I had to guess, 1887.

Sorry, but the date is far too curved and spread apart. To the best of my knowledge, the real 1877 date is straight and (relatively) tiny.
