Picked this up in a bargain bin. Can anyone explain what happened to this 5 cent piece? Thank you.

Interesting. Was this coin in a fire? Lets see what the other CCF members think.

no fire, the coin would have been melted/blackened.

i think pressure of some kind was involved, pressure on the coin. maybe something heavy rested on it.

THAT, OR maybe the coin experienced water/freezing of some kind and cracked.

So far the opinion is PMD? I also have never seen this type of damage on a nickel, at least to this extent.

I have seen coins like that come out of the acidic environment of a sewer. I'm not sure why they get "etched" like that with all the "cracks".

Thanks Conder. I ran that coin past a couple of collectors and dealers. Majority were in agreement for PMD, but couldn't figure out the cause. I'll discuss your thought with them.

Even if the etching is from a sewer, it would still be PMD with the damage coming from an environmental source.

I have a similar nickel, a Buffalo, that I jokingly labeled the "earthquake" variety. I once showed it to an error specialist who suggested that it might have been subjected to glue. I never got around to giving it a soaking to see if he was correct. Now, I expect that it's buried in a box here, somewhere.
