Here's another 1952D that appears to have divided serifs but oddly the serifs themselves appear "squashed"

Odd precision that it'd only strike both serifs on the MM with no residual on the area adjacent...interesting.

Be it from bagging or circulated PMD, the odd precision contact marks seem to be more common than you might think. Thanks, Doug.

On the lower serif there are some examples of this happening that the punch was damaged and created this look:

Note the information box above the images.

Quote:
1952D-1MM-012
| D/D/D TILTED & TILTED (MDS)
CONECA: RPM-012 | Crawford:UNKNOWN
Wexler: WRPM-012 | FS#:UNLISTED
coin photographed is credited to Bob Piazza.
A nice split serif can be seen on the upper mintmark.
The bottom serif shows evidence of a damaged punch.

I'm not saying this is a coin from that die, just that there was a damaged punch that year that made this happen.

That's interesting. So on that coin (CC's site) it was the PUNCH that created the damage and NOT PMD. It's so easy to just say "it's PMD" ...it's used so much when I think it's more "a possibility with options" when trying to figure out some of these anomalies.
Thanks Coop.
