Were there too many 1964 quarter minted to ever be worth more than scrap? Whenever I go to my LCS I search through the scrap silver bins for hole fillers in my albums. There are always unc looking 1964 and 1963 quarters in the bin. So obviously he's not selling them at a premium even though they are in unc condition. After I pick out what I need for my album ill pick up a few of the nicer quarters. I keep them in a separate tube than the other scrap quarters but does it really matter since just looking at the mintages they just seem way too common. Should I be picking out some of the older dated quarters instead, even if they are in poor condition or is scrap just scrap no matter what?

They sell for $7-8 on ebay (shipped). Although I guess that just nets you about melt after shipping and fees. I wish I could have found them in the junk bin at my LCS - theirs is always empty when I go in.

It's going to take a few decades before the AU+ 1964 quarters command a premium over melt. Think of it this way: Even the most common Seated/Barber/Standing/Whatever quarters in higher grades are significantly worth more than melt.

Don't forget to check for the B reverses on the 63s and 64s, and the C reverse on the 64Ds.

1964 quarters didn't get much of a chance to circulate. Same with 1964 dimes and halves. I think that has a lot to do with why there are a lot of them in AU/BU state.

Thanks edweather, saving that site to my library. Ill have to go take a look. I'm gonna keep them separate and just keep adding to it. Might be able to get a premium on them one day for a whole roll of au/bu.

The mint struck 1964 quarters until late 1965 or early 1966, thus the very high mintage for that date. The presses for 1965 clads ran right along with presses for 1964 silver, therefore some silver planchets ended up going into 1965 clad presses by mistake. I wish I had one of the 1965 silvers.

Always, always, always keep your eye out if you buy "junk silver" quarters. That is where you have the best chance of finding this rarity.

Hmmm Silver is Silver. I snatch it up whenever I see it reasonable. Nice Job for sure.
