Hello Everybody! I am glad to have found this forum and looking forward to chatting here. I have never bought a historical coin but I would like to start collecting of British coins. So far I got only a few contemporary commemorative coins and medals issued by Czech, Canadian or Royal mints.
Anybody of you could advice if I can rely on verification by CGS LTD http://www.coingradingservices.co.uk/ when buying old coins?

Yes, CGS is reputable and strict in their grading.

Two important things worth remembering though.

Firstly, CGS grade to a 100 point scale and so can't be directly compared to say US slabbed coins (where a 70 point scale is used).

Secondly, TPGS aren't that popular in the UK with the vast majority of coins being bought and sold uncertified. You will therefore not only be paying a premium for a slabbed over a 'raw' coin, but will have a much smaller selection to choose from when making purchases.

Much better to do what most UK collectors do and learn how to grade and assess coins for yourself.

Of course, most people are keen to start collecting, rather than read a book. In which case, if you let us know what reigns/ periods or denominations you are interested in collecting people maybe able to recommend trustworthy dealers whose stock you could consider?

People can reply here or if you change your account settings to accept emails (the default seems to be not to) people could message you with links to avoid clogging up the 'welcome' thread!

Oh and

.

Nice to see you took my advice and started a "Hello" thread.
If you want to get your feet wet in collecting British coins when I was overseas in 2012 I finnished a 2012 50p Olympic set and a "Shield" set in 4 days! Don't go over board until you know what you are doing and are sure coin collecting is for you.

Remember, buy the book before the coin.

I hope to see more of your posts in the future

Thank you all!! ...and advice much appreciated! Now I am investigating about guineas. I believe there already are posts with this topic. After I learn something I will probably pop in to share my thoughts before actually buying anything. And yes, definitely will buy some reading first as I don“t have enough money yet anyway :-D
