I saw a guy at a coin star machine about to dump his loose change in. I killed me to think what he was dumping in. Anyone make an offer to buy an unknown amount off someone? Problem is that I'm a terrible guesses.

Might be a decent idea. Doesn't coinstar charge 10% or something? Maybe play on that.
I'm also horrible at guessing, I do a bad, bad job at the jelly bean guess at the fair every year

At some point the "dumper" is probably willing to take a big hit on the change just to be rid of it, but by the time they get to CoinStar they've done 95% of the work so wouldn't be as inclined to give it away. They'd have to think it was a better deal than giving 7-10% away to CoinStar.
It's a risk either way, though probably not a huge one if you're interested in the potential finds.

Worked fantastic for me. Some time back at a yard sale I asked if there were any old coins or coins in a jar they wanted to sell. The lady went inside, came out with a jar of pennies. The entire bottom looked like all Indian Head cents. She said I should sit down and count them if I wanted them. I just offered her $50 and she took it. At home I counted out $35 in face value. The NEWEST coin was in the 50's. All of the others were much, much older.

This premise worked wonders for me. I was waiting at my dump bank to get rid of some searched pennies. This particular bank will not take any coin at all, either loose or rolled, that has not gone through their machine first for which it prints out a receipt. Anyway, this fellow was opening up rolled coins that he said were left behind by an absconding tenant. I had some money on me and I really didn't feel like waiting for him to open and dump all the rolls that he had. So I made him an offer to buy the dimes and quarters from him. He really didn't want to take the offer because he couldn't swear that they were properly filled. I promised him that I didn't care as I was also there to buy some coins for my business (which I wasn't just wanted him out and away). He agreed and the deal was done.
Dumped by pennies and completed my business with the bank. When I got home I found 4 rolls of silver quarters and 3 rolls of silver dimes. So out of $300 face I found much more silver there than when I actually go looking for it.
This happened awhile ago and I never had a day like that again. I made similar deals since then but without the same luck.

How lazy are people that this service actually exists... wow. 10 % is a lot for anything, especially cash you already own. Exploitation or ignorance?
F't'were I, I would offer to buy them at 0% and give out my phone number.

You wouldn't spend a few dollars for something that saves an hour of your time or more? It's going to take at least an hour to sort $50 in random change, roll it, and find a bank that takes rolls from walk ins. 99% of people wouldn't know a collectible or silver coin if they had a whole roll of them, so it's not like going through the money is going to net them anything in that regard. Or you can just take the change jar to the store you were already going to, spend nearly zero time and zero gas and get money you can actually use.

If you throw coins in a jar instead of rolling them as you go you deserve to get ripped off.

A little know fact, Coin stars don't eat silver. They spit it back out in fact. I have offered people melt for what coin stars spit out, they always bite. So unless your after coppers or numi, just wait til they are done.
