Just like it say New Discovery 1946 Full design but with Guitar strings through the 9... You can see the 3 strings on the outside of the 9 going into the design ..Then you see it inside the 9 and then between the 1 & 9...... It is not a scratch.. I have blown up the pics extra large and there is no marks on the 9 at all .... I put 2 pics.. not sure which one is better So is it a worthy discovery ? Edited by artdio 09/02/2014 2:23 pm

These could be die scratches and maybe common to all 46 hoofs, mine has then also. While you have yours out, have a look to see if it has a double clash between the mid and right maple leafs from the kings chin.

These marks are fine die scratches imparted to the die when preparing it for use. They get less noticable the longer the die is in use.... on my examples they are still fairly prominent.

Sorry that I was rushed on my previous answer, but to expand on it. The die scratches are actually fine file marks that were imparted to the die when the Mint worker was manually finishing it. The 194x's 50cent (except 1940) dies were the only denomination for George VI where the last two date digits were entered manually. This extra die working sometimes introduced an exposure where some dies needed additional finishing requiring the file. Because of the ten-fold increased requirement for 50cent coins (see mintages for 1937-1939) die production was very rushed and polishing of the dies to remove these file marks (die scratches) was not performed or not completely performed. The file marks are very common 1942-1946. As mentioned above, they can be used as markers when studying die varieties. They do attenuate, becoming fainter, with usage.
