First, I'm sorry I can't take a photo because my iPhone keeps staying not enough storage, it remains at 0 bytes even though I've deleted a lot of pics.
I found a 1976 penny with longer denticles, a bit like a 1975 penny. The other 1976s have regular short stumpy ones like a 1978. Does anyone have any info on this? I'll scan it when I've got my printer set up.

Pics added! My phone is being cooperative today. The denticles on this coin are longer than the denticles on this coin all the way around. Here's a side-by-side shot. Mods, if you feel that this topic is better in the variety section, please move it. And is it possible to edit the title to remove the "no pics" after 1 day?

Hi SlurExe97
I've noticed the same thing over the past few years, myself. At first I was setting aside all '76's in case one was more prevalent, but after I'd searched a couple hundred or so, I found that they were split about 50/50 between the long and short denticles. My guess is that they changed formats sometime during the year, so that some working dies had one style and some had the other.

Interesting pennysaver. I'll keep an eye on the 1976s and see if I find anything about them. They don't seem to be a listed variety?

Interesting. Seems like 1975 all have longer denticles, 1977 have stubby denticles, 1976 was a year of indecision.

Is this variety listed anywhere? I haven't had time to look at the penny rolls again, but I'll post here if I find that one has more or less than the other.

Denticles on business strike coins will always be susceptible to variation. Lots of things can happen to change the look of them other than just die wear... its a long road from its conception to landing on the coin.

I didn't find the denticles as a variety or an error anywhere. The one on the right looks like it has longer denticles on top and smaller on the bottom, could it just be struck off center a little?

Yes, in any given year there is always variation in denticles. However if you compare the length of denticles for 1975 and 1977, you'll see that for 1975 they are on average markedly longer. So for 1976, is there a mixture of 1975 style and 1977 style denticles? or is the variation due to some other factor? I was hoping to lead SlurExe97 to discover the answer for herself. Look here and it won't take long to see there is a definite difference between 1975 and 1977. http://www.ebay.ca/sch/i.html?_odkw...&_sacat=3389

In the pic with 2- 76s the denticles are all the same size but the one on the right is worn down around the edges due to being locked into an off center position and clashing with the inside bevel of a very hard collar die. Once worn down they cant be replaced so when the die is repositioned to center smaller denticles appear on one side. Sometimes over polishing can run them down as well.
I agree DBM I see the subtle changes in the years too.
