While I didn't win it, as the bidding got too rich for my pocket book, I was part of an auction for a Galla Placidia, the half-sister of Honorius and Arcadius, SALVS REIPVBLICAE AE-4 from the Rome mint that was misattributed as an Arcadius.

When I emailed the seller to ask if he'd ship to the US he seemed surprised that the auction was attracting so much attention. I let him know what he had and, to his credit, he didn't correct the auction listing but let it go on.

He ended up making quite a tidy profit since this was part of a small lot of coins he purchased for just a few Pounds Sterling.

It does go to show that there are treasures lurking out there.

The obverse is rough, but CIDIA in PLACIDIA shows and the reverse is pretty decent for the type.

Here's the auction listing:

Even if I had enough money and was searching around, I would have totally missed it!

I saw it, but whats the point on bidding on a misattributed coin if you're going to pay full price anyway?
