I'm thinking about starting a Walking Liberty collection. I think I'll start with the 'short set' to give me a kick start. What is a good price I should look to pay to purchase a complete 'short set' ('41 - '47) in XF-AU condition?

By purchasing a complete set, you're missing 3/4 of the fun. imho

I agree, most of the fun and sense of accomplishment comes from filling a blank album a coin or two at a time. Just my Two Cents though.

I've seen those short sets in Whitman Albums. They also make the complete Album in one binder. Don't now why anyone would just want the so called short set. So much fun trying to make a complete Album of those. One nice thing though is you should be able to make that short set for about $20 to $70 per coin in AU or better.

If you want the short set just for the sake of having it, buying a whole set would be fine for you. If, on the other hand, you want the set as a fun series to collect, then buying individual coins would give you more pleasure. It all depends on your motive.

Well just to answer the OP's question, in XF-AU, I'd plan on $15-20 per coin including shipping. So $300-400.

The short set can be done in higher grades for areasonable amount, so I can see doing it like that. I have one of the short set Danscos that I bought by mistake. Once I finish the full set circulated I will work on that one in MS

I agree if your gonna do a short set, do MS64 or above. Might take more time and $ but the result will be better. Just my opinion.....

I like the idea of doing the short set in MS-64 or better. This will obviously take some time. I was thinking of putting that time into working on the older coins, as my wallet says that I'll have to go as cheap as possible. Appreciate in input.

I assembled a short set in MS65. Except for 41-S, 42-S,43-S & 44-S all others can be found under $300 each. The 41-S is the real grade to price stopper of the set from MS64 - MS65 (NGC $210 - $925, PCGS $235 - $785, Numismedia $216 - $810).

I know you have been cracking your commemorative out of the holders, Augiedog. So for that reason I wouldn't get too hung up on grade. You'll have to resubmit the coins to resell them as an MS-64. If you want a high grade set in an album, I'd buy coins advertised as BU and just look for ones that you think look as high grade as possible. If you are not going to resell them or display them in the holder, then who cares if it's MS-62 or MS-65 as long as they look frosty and unworn.

Notice I said only MS. I agree with tkbslc. As long as they are uncirculated coins and have good eye appeal, I would not worry over them being graded to 64 or better.

Good thoughts. I collected my Morgans as a mix of raw/certified. My Commemoratives are the same way. I'm not cracking any holders, I'm transferring any that are in capsules into holders. I think I'll try to get the Walker short set in BU, as suggested, and the rest in raw, keeping everything in the album. Thanks for all the super input.

I totally agree with doing one coin at a time. That will allow you to assemble a "matched set" according to your own criteria.

Why not start on the 1916-21 short set? Start with an XF 1916 P or D. The deep strike will whet your appetite.
