I have been working on this coin for months.

Sorry I did not take a picture of this coin when I bought it. Try to picture a very nice detailed coin, that had been polished to a bright shine.

After months I am starting to get it to turn/tone back to a coin color .... of course not there yet .. but I was taking pictures so I thought I would ask opinions.

Do you think this one will ever tone back to a half-way decent looking coin.

It will take a long time. Once you weak it down to VF it will probably be market acceptable. What I would be more concerned about is what looks like PVC residue on the cap.

Not planning to wear it down at all .....

And trust me ... Based on what I have done so far ... There is no PVC

Shiny coins are good raw materials for coin experiments. This one needs some sulfur....Taco Bell napkin wrap? Matches? You should be able to get it fully black then work back to what you like. My last good shiny was a polished 1916-D walker with full feathers. It now looks like it spent some time in a steel mill worker's pocket.

I agree ... They can be picked up very cheap ....l just have to have vision for what it can end up looking
like.

I am trying to go slow ... But Taco Bell napkins were next on my list.

When I started there was zero toning on this coin, was all bright silver.

Looks better than what you probably got it at. Sounds interesting. I've got some spare coins I may attempt to tone naturally that aren't worth anything. Hopefully you get some more progress.

Not sure what your looking for but from the photos you show, I'd say leave it as is. This coin looks better than many I've seen at coin shows and coin stores. I still say leave it as is. Any further messing with may do more damage than good.

No, because the toning won't affect the physical damage which has been done to the coin. Regardless of color, holding the coin at the right angle will disclose the cleaning. The only save for this one is a couple grades of wear in your pocket - the marks have to be removed by "circulation."

Dave got it, the whizzing means the coin will have to be worn down to look original.

This is what makes this site interesting ...

When someone posts a cleaned coin, I often see replies about how bad it is and will never
be something a real collector would want.

But then I have seen post of classic coins, with replies about how great it looks .... Even if it has a old cleaning.

Yes .. Of course there are different levels of cleanings. And I would agree there are some coins that have been
cleaned beyond help.

I also know from past post, that most people will not change their minds about cleaned coins, some hate them
some don't mind them so much.

My opinion is that a coin like this will have more value as a high XF/AU details coin, with good eye appeal.
Than a pocket worn VF.

For years I have enjoyed taking coins like these ... That someone has cleaned to the point that it has lost a lot of value
And try to restore some level of that value. Of course one can not expect to restore full value.

But .... When you can buy a coin like this for $60 ..... It is possible to bring some value back

This is why I haven't spoken out against what you're doing - the proof is in the pudding. If you make this coin look OK, then it's OK. Plain and simple. However, I can't help but think that the cleaning process has left physical evidence which the toning won't hide, in which case a knowledgeable numismatist will catch it.

If I'm wrong, even better.

As long as there is no deception involved if you sell it ( I know there would not be). I say mess with it all you want! I also like playing with these type of coins. Have a few harshly cleaned Large Cents sitting in a window now.

I do wonder what those that don't like cleaned coins think we should do with them.

I hope everyone knows I did not clean this coin, it came into a LCS this way.

When we find cleaned coins ..... Should we have them melted?

Amida ...your right ...no deception planned ... I bought the coin because I liked how much detailed it has.

I am liking the coin ...more and more ... No plans to sell it

To be fair .. Dave is right .. I have seen responses be much more negative then what is getting here ..

I guess I was hoping to show ... or hope I will show how there can be hope for some badly cleaned coins.

In my experience .. it is a long process that takes years.

edit .. and will agree .. a person with knowledge may always be able to tell. I do remember a response a old
collector told me at a coin show a few years back. I was telling him a coin looked cleaned ... his response was.
I big percent of pre 1900 coins have been cleaned in some way or another. Many have tone back to the look they have today.
