So, NGC has announced they have brought back the retro holder "by popular demand." Anyone have any opinion about this holder? Specifically with Morgan dollars? Do these sell for premiums over the regular holders?

I saw that today on the website. I doubt they are bringing mush of a premium now, if any. With the re-introduction, there will be more coins in the holders. I did think about requesting it for a few raw coins that I soon will be submitting.
However, I read the details and saw the following instructions, "Starting October 1, 2014, NGC will again offer its popular black retro holder and black label for the following US coins:...as well as all common date Morgan dollars and Peace dollars." Then at the bottom there is this, "NGC reserves the right to not accept certain high grade Morgan and Peace dollars for the Retro Holder promotion, or dates that are considered to be rare."

I really don't know what they are trying to do or what the big deal is with certain Morgan and Peace dollars. It kind of killed interest for me. I don't know it they are promoting for the big box retailers or what.

Considering it first came back in 2012 as a "Limited time only" offer and just for ASE's and golden dollars, but then it turned out that NGC authorized dealers could also have Morgans and Peace dollars slabbed in them. Then it came back "by popular demand" in 2013 for all four coin types, and now has again come back "by popular demand", I don't see any potential for a premium value in the future because of the holder.

I agree. The black insert is just not appealing to me. A Morgan dollar just doesn't look right in one of those. I'm glad the white insert is their standard.
