I'm still digging through my late uncle's coin collection after more than a year. I finally got to his rather large collection of old Russian 5 kopek copper coins. On one of them, I notice some oddness around the last two digits of the date. I've come to find that over-dating was a somewhat common practice in the late 1700's. I've also seen that some over dates are rare and can add substantial value to a coin. So the coin I found (pictures attached) is a 1792-EM 5 kopeks that appears to be an overdate of a 1789. A rather exhaustive search via several search engines yielded nothing, except one third-hand tidbit. I have seen a rumor (unsubstantiated to this point) that Brekke's book may have a listing of this overdate. If so, I would desperately love to learn what it says about this particular one, how rare or common it may be and how it is properly identified in the literature. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all.

Steve

Hi Steve,

I just checked my Brekke (and the 1997 supplement). There are no varieties listed in either for Brekke #292, (the 1792-EM 5 Kopek). (Some overstrikes are shown for other dates, but nothing for 1792).

Sorry about that.

Bill

P.S. - I have an extra copy of the original Brekke. I think I'll list it on ebay.
