I purchased a new (and very rare) Conder token in the past few weeks. It has pretty awesome edge lettering, and I wanted to be able to present a composite image including some of the details of that.

The obverse and reverse images were just taken with my standard copy stand, bellows, and DSLR+duplicating lens set-up, lit with Jansjo lamps from IKEA.

To get the edge images, I made a small plastic stand out of polycaprolactone (thermal plastic) that would allow the coin to lean at a slight angle. I then took 4 shots of each of the three "views" at different depths of field. I used focus-stacking software to combine those images, and then combined the obverse, reverse, and three "views" of the edge into one photo composite below. I added black ellipses beneath the edge pieces and a bit of drop shadow to all components to give it some depth.

Also, I thought some of you might like to see an original hand drawing of this token from a book published in 1801, the first such book to index this token which was struck in 1799.

Cheers, Brandon

Impressive but a much better technique is to find a large Flashlight ( INcandescent type not LED) remove the reflector and place the coin in the reflector....that way you can photograph the full edge. Then in your photo editing program you can flip the edge image over( so its not longer mirror image) PM me if you have questions.....on the technique.....I think this mirror method would have spectacular results with your coin: Here a photo of a medal which I wanted to display the two different edge types:

Hi Austro, I have seen the flashlight method before. It's been around for a long time. The problem I have had with it in the past is that I don't only collect coins of one diameter, and it doesn't work well for coins or medals of very different diameters. I also don't like dropping my coins down onto a mirrored surface, and then fiddling around with them to get them centered, etc. It's a method that certainly works if you are imaging a lot of edges, but I rarely have the need to image edges.

Your medal does look cool though!!

brg5658- Very nice edge lettering pics! I've tried on a few Capped Bust half dollars, but haven't gotten great results yet.

austrokiwi- I like your method- looks like great results.

Both good methods!
