Found?
Anyway, the coin doesn't look bad at all. I see a touch of wear on the obverse (Could be some weakness though), reverse looks MS, but to be conservative I'll stick to AU-58.

she found it in a letter to her (deceased)dad, she has provenience showing it was gifted to her relatives in 1887.

I think it's pretty cool to know that it's been in the same family for 125+ years.
I lack grading experience with gold but this looks high AU possibly low MS to my eye.

Cool story. Since it's a common date, any problems would drop the value to near melt (~$300) and if it is a problem-free AU+ piece you'd be looking at about $400.

Tough to say from the scans, but I think it somewhere around lower to mid AU. Really neat that the provenance traced back to close to the time when it was minted!

Well, 8+ years later, and many thanks to my friend who initiated the original post... I still have the coin and am still wondering the best way to receive a fair price.

Just take it to a couple of reputable coin dealers for an offers. From what I can see, it might be worth sending in for grading, but better images would be needed.

It's a small low-res pic but the coin looks very promising to me -- far better than initial assessments you got from posters in 2014. I suspect it's a mint state piece, maybe very high grade. The reverse especially is obviously outstanding. I would certainly get it graded and slabbed. I would suggest PCGS for gold. I'm experimenting with Great Collections for the first time this week. If you send them raw coins they will submit them to a TPG and then to CAC without taking a commission, then auction the newly slabbed coins off in their slabs.

All, Thanks for the replies. @Pristing2, Thank you for the heads up. I'll watch to see what you think of them. Interested in what anyone else thinks too. The more information the better.

Very neat family heirloom, but if you have to sell it, I agree that you should get it graded. The photos aren't the best to grade from, but I don't see any definite wear, and it could be mint state.

It is hard to see with the posted images. Can you post new images without the watermark?
