Fascinating insanity going on here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/23132961235...RK:MEBIDX:IT

Is it that easy to just pass these off as real and pocket the difference. As the seller says it is 100% LIKE the real ones.

The seller's location alone should be enough to scare away any savvy eBayer.

The last offer has taken it over the price I paid for my genuine specimen in 2006...

I saw this one on ebay a couple days ago and thought about posting it here as a fake. But then, I realized that it looked fake, but I couldn't tell why. I didn't want to post it as a fake without being able to back that up. Can anyone help me understand why it's fake? What are the tell tale sings that are giving me the gut feeling that its fake, but I'm having a hard time describing?

I think the seller told us it was not real in his ad:

"Picture silver 100% like the original"

At any rate, if I were to pay that much I would at least want the coin slabbed--of course I suppose that could also be fake. Not all Chinese vendors are crooks, but when someone come out and TELLS you.

Anyways, too rich for my blood--still waiting for the Somalia 2001 250 shilling (silver Gothic crown copy) to come along on the bay. There are plenty of the 25 shilling nickel clad ones up right now at prices that are a bit high (from Portugal). You can buy copies and the Somalian clad at Coincraft for less.

The fact that it's from China clued me in. The previous poster said "Not all Chinese vendors are crooks". Since I can't tell who are and who aren't, they are all suspect to me. It pays to be careful and look at the sellers feedback along with their location. A foreign seller with a ton of positive feedback, especially from U.S. buyers, might be considered "safer" than those with little to none.

The second thing that caught my eye was the number of feedbacks that the seller has received. Although everyone has to start from 0, I'd never give that kind of money to someone with 16 feedbacks.

The third thing that gave me concern was the bid list. About 20 consecutive bids from the same bidder who has 0 feedback is a big red flag to me. Looks to me like the seller or his associate are bidding up the price but are being very careful not to outbid the current leader.

Use common sense when buying on ebay. I don't think those who bid on this coin did.
