Just purchased a standard florin ( ebay 301305489742)and it looks like a high grade florin struck with chrome dies. How does PCGS treat these coins (favourably?) when submitted as I'm hoping for MS64 (or is that optimistic)
How uncommon are chrome '54s? Are they just scarce or would they be rare (like less than 1 in 100 of that years florins).

Pretty much impossible to grade from the sellers pic's But it isn't inconceivable for this coin to grade MS64 as the chrome dies did produce a superior coin.
Nicely picked up Mate

I have had little luck with chrome die coins and PCGS. Not sure if it's them not liking them or just never finding a good one. My 1954 florin in MS64 doesn't have the chrome die look to it.

Mark, do you come across many chrome die coins? I've had little luck (till now) of getting many of them so have they been already cherry picked from bulk lots or were they always very scarce. Seems strange that they had chrome dies for 20 years alongside normal dies and only chromed a few dies each year. If it was an experiment then they took their time about it to make a decision to accept/reject chroming. Any chance that chroming was partly done in the pre proof days to strike specimen coins?

Not a stupid question at all, It does appear that way but if you look at the 1 and the 4 they do in fact line up OK.
Can you get a good image of obverse and reverse for this coin , it could be a proof going by the motley looking surfaces that these are plagued by because of the crappy black plastic cases these were marketed in?

Picked up the florin from the Post Office on Friday.
Not a MS64 coin.

More like a MS65 (or even 66)[d-pepper; there are a number of minor scratches on the obverse that might hold it down from Gem (66 or 67) but the mirror surfaces are amazing and the details on the central shield are so well struck up that it far surpasses in quality a 1961 florin in PCGS MS65 that I also got this week. Only the scratches will stop it from being a clear top of the pop coin.
Probably not a proof as the rims and beading are not like on my proofs from a few years later. My understanding is that there are no '54 proofs, could there have been specimen strikes?

Yep, the chrome die silver is a bit of a glare overload. I still have no real explanation of why the mint only struck a small portion of the circulation silver with chrome for decades. It doesn't seem that there was a purpose to their effort.
