Hey All,

Ive got another big roman looking coin. Which when I compare it with other coins looking on the reverse. It could be augustus. But thats because the temple with the lyrics in it on the backside is alot on august coins.

I was wondering if someone can give me more information. Or better some tips so I can identify it myself :) I like to learn more about ancient coins the best way to do it is with less help as possible and just an direction..

On one side of this coin it has an head on it. You can still see the lines of the face. The other side has an temple looking with lyrics in it . I think it is from the same period as te other coin I jst posted. Because some lyrics look the same.

The diameter of this coin is 28 MM and it weights 15,5 grams.

The temple with the words inside is also featured on some Tiberius coins. Check out this one that I have (seller's pictures, I haven't had a chance to photograph it yet.)

Flipping back and forth between my coin and yours it looks like they may be the same, but I can't be sure. Mine is tentatively attributed as RPC 65, which should have "PROIDENTIAE AVGVSTI, MVNIC ITALIC PERM DIVI AVG" on the reverse and "TI CAESAR AVGVSTVS PONT MAX IMP" on the obverse. If the attribution is correct it would have been minted in Italica Spain. You can also check wildwind's pictures.

Thx! You are right I've found some similair pieces. There are some differences in weight though..
And the shape of the head is different on some pieces. But it is not an common coin though..

The top one is the one you ment. At least the descriptoin says it is RPC65. But the head shape looks different on the obverse. The wieght is 18,5 on that coin mine is 15.

The second one has more the same shape of the head as mine. But is 11 grams. Do'nt know if it is normal that the differences are big in weights?

Thats a nice one, a popular design. I recommend aa long term soak in oil, might get some more detail out of it.

Hello Ben,
Thx for your reaction.
What kind of oil is then recommended for this coin? And how you make it afterwards. That it doens't feel like it has been in oil for an long time?

The usual advice is Olive Oil. Higher quality olive oil is less greasy. To get the oil off afterwards I use dish soap, then customarily treat the coin for bronze disease for a couple of weeks. For this coin, I'm not sure if it would improve from it, but it wont get worse. The oil would darken the patina - to avoid this, you can use Distilled Water, which is much slower, but does treat for BD at the same time.
