I really can't find any guides for valuing a civil war token error. This token would be about $30.00 - $40.00 retail if XF no error. Valuing is based on rarity, and I can't find any of these. I suppose if it is rare but nobody wants it, that would have an impact on price as well. Anyone with an opinion? Or what would you pay for it? It is 5/288a R2.

IMHO ... $75 or so would be a fair price. This is about three times what this variety typically brings. I've seen a few lesser off-center CWT's, common varieties, sell in the $40-$50 range.

Let's see what this one fetches: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-York-Ci...em2c8bc368ca

This variety has long been a favorite of mine, given that God is recognized on this token, a year before He was acknowledged on the Two Cent Pieces.

Of course, these oddities can often command higher prices at auction when two serious collectors vie for ownership. These error pieces have strong eye appeal. Of course, there are fees for auctions.

If this was mine, I'd use some acetone to gently remove that surface material. The black areas won't disappear, but the lighter material should. If left there, that material will bore into the surface. I'm willing to bet that an acetone-dipped Q-tip will lift a lot from this piece. Such conservation will give this piece a longer shelf life. Be sure to gently dry the surface, afterwards, and delay putting it in a flip for awhile.

Coin Care is good or else acetone from a hardware store, not nail polish remover.

Much better! Good to see that debris has been lifted and know that the effects of these surface contaminants have been neutralized.
