I recently got into collecting Lincoln proofs and thought I got a good deal on a 1951 DDO. When I received the coin, it showed a bunch of spotting as if there was a finger print on it before slabbing. The seller did a great job getting the reflection just right to not highlight the spotting. It was graded PF64RD and bought it for $50. Not much more than a non-spotted non-DDO 1951 proof. Other DDO examples went for $60-90. Is it still worth the price paid? Is spotting the kiss of death?

I was also hoping I could get a quick crash course on spotting, how long it takes for it to show up, is it natural after being touched with fingers, or more prone to occur after dipping? how about toning? does a coin quickly tone after being dipping and slabbed?

thank you for the help!

The spotting is likely why the coin only got a 64, there's nothing you can do about it...you can't "dip" copper, especially proofs.

What would happen if you dipped a brilliant proof?

A copper one? You'd get a hideous orangish-colored monstrosity which announced to the world that it had been ruined. Copper and thiourea don't get along well.

It's not inconceivable to think that the coin went through grading before the spotting appeared - fingerprints can take a few days to appear as permanent damage (which is what they are; once they're there, you can't remove them).

Id love to see examples of dipping and artifical toning both good and bad and after 10 years or so to see how copper reacts over time. Anyone know of some good reference material? I can return the coin, but I've noticed that a 1951 proof doesn't go for much less with similar issues, so the DDO is basically a bonus if I can just get over the spotting.
