You might not know that there was a shortage of silver in the UK at the time. Apart from a very rare issue of shillings in 1798 the next coinage of George III was the machine made series of 1816. Which were effectively 'fiat' or token coinage in that the face value of the coins was, unlike previously, greater than the intrinsic value of the metal from which they were made.
