Like many collectors of US coins, also I am attracted by the allure of coins minted at Carson City mint. I had to look long and hard for this example of CC coinage, and finally found this one in a Stacks auction. Coinfacts estimates the extant population at 120 examples. Decades later, how would you grade it? Edited by GERMANICVS 09/25/2014 08:28 am

I'm on board with F-12. Terrific, unmolested example of a really tough date. It'd probably realize in excess of $3000 today.

The Quarters and Dimes bearing this date are incredibly elusive, the more recent ones being found with metal detectors here in California.

It bears mentioning that these are brutally tough to find without a Details grade when circulated. If there are 30 known in this grade range (wildly optimistic), 20 of them are Details coins.

Quote: $3K of money? Thats a lot of dough for a single coin Not if it is worth $3000. In that case it's just a transfer of capital from cash to something worth the same amount of cash. Not a lot different that any other semi-liquid asset.

Germanics, you knew what you were doing in your college days sir because what you continue to post over course of time that you picked up stateside in those days is just incredible to me. What a coin to have in this series and so original. Nice pick up even 30 years later my friend.
In today's landscape, not that I profess to know the landscape over the decades as comparison but, I would think this coin will fare better in a PCGS holder and is worth, along with a lot of other stuff you have, being sealed and conserved in a more permanent state.

Thank you for your kind comments, dsfreeworld. Rest assured, I want to get some of my coins encapsulated. Cannot take the risk of my wife dusting my coins again when she cleans house (yes, she really did do that once because, as she said, 'they are gathering dust sitting out on that tray'). Both PCGS and NGC are now present in Europe, and I intend to approach them at the next major Frankfurt Show in november.
