Of course, when you see a defaced "key date" coin with the date much more thoroughly scratched than the rest of the devices, you know what the deal is.

In this case, it is clearly an 1851 business strike. The 1852 proof has a much larger, curlier 5, as well as a curly 2. If the last digit in this coin were a 2, it would have a straight bottom.

My question to you all: What should I do? Contact seller? Contact ebay? Let the buyer beware?

With the new ebay reporting paradigm, I'm not sure what to do!

Thanks.

If I think an item is fake, this is what I pick to report it.

IMO reporting stuff to ebay is tilting at windmills any more. If it makes you feel better, though.

Looking at the other items for sale and the ones already sold (feedback) this seller is not a coin dealer. So it could be an honest mistake. Contact the seller first and if refuse to fix the listing then do the report to ebay.

Get this 1852 Half Cent RESTRIKE Proof Braided Hair Half Cent valued $10,000 Plus. For a great deal. Because, it was damaged in a theft and recovered by the police department and I had bought this from a government auction. I am sailing this rare coin at auction.

Totally agree with SD.....Don't forget, it's ebay, buyer beware. Most people know this and the rest don't care.

I've probably reported more than 100 of these kinds of listing in the past year. As soon as the CCF reporting link went down and ebay shut down the fraud links we used to be able to use, I've not seen any of my reported fraudulent coins get removed before the auction is over. Pathetic job ebay.

Well, I didn't report. Someone bought it for $249!

They may be sorry much soon than 10 years - especially if they send it for grading (or take it to a coin show or LCS).

On the other hand, I guess I should just see ebay like any flea market. Buyer beware!
