This is an ANACS photograde from 1981. It has been sitting in a little baggie inside it's original 2x2 flip for more than 30 years. I'm not sure if it has any pvc residue on it or not, but it does seem a bit dull. I've used acetone on lesser coins before, but just wanted to get some feedback before trying it on this. Thanks. Ed

Acetone will not react with the metal in the coin NOR any toning it's acquired.
Acetone will only remove surface debris (dirt, gum, PVC, etc.)

I always rinse with distilled water afterwards since the residue can redeposit.

I appreciate the replies. I've used acetone before with good results, but not on a "real" coin like this one . Just a little nervous.

I've seen others mention that too. I prefer to rinse with fresh acetone.

Probably just looking for a little encouragement before I (it) takes the plunge.
Rest in Peace

Cautionary note. Some plastics can be dissolved in acetone. Be careful using it around such things as magnifiers. Especially if they have plastic housings or lenses. And be very careful around TPG slabs.

I see no reason why this one can't have an acetone bath. Don't bother with the distilled water rinse - kinda defeats the purpose of the acetone.

I see no reason to mess with this coin. It is way OK as it is. Why mess with something that doesn't need messing with.
True Acetone should not do anything to the coin but why? Doesn't need any messing with. Great as is.

I agree it looks good. That's why I'm torn. Just wasn't sure if sitting in the little baggie inside the flip for 30 years dulled it. There isn't much luster, and thought it might brighten a bit.

Because you can't see PVC residue on the surface of a coin for the first few months it's active. Every new coin in everyone's collection should get an acetone rinse.

Definitely couldn't hurt to acetone it. Post pics of the results if you choose to go that route, Ed.

Wow. Could you clarify this. I think you mean older coins.
Maybe I'm reading this wrong and taken out of content.
