Hey Everyone,
I'm back again with a new addition to the family. A nice 83-s for the collection never hurts. I'm a little interested in the surfaces on this one. Can anyone give me any insight into if this ones been cleaned? I cant see any marks or wear that would lead me to believe it has been but its just got so much eye appeal.

PS: Sorry about the hair near the wings on the rev.

The luster is subdued for a coin of this grade with so little tone, however, I don't really see any obvious signs of cleaning.

Likewise, I see no abrasions from cleaning, but perhaps it was dipped for a second or two too long to strip away some luster.

I don't see a thing to cause worry about this coin.

A member of VAMworld who is known to me, and who lurks here at CCF, informed me via email of his worries about this coin. I looked at it, and made my original post, from my smartphone which allowed me a pretty good look but not necessarily a good research base for known varieties.

He made the point that there is no 1883-S obverse known with a Far, Slanted date such as this coin manifests. Further investigation draws one's attention to the 3 in the date, as well as certain serifs of both obverse and reverse lettering and some of the relationships between them.

I have to qualify this opinion by noting that the images do not appear to be perfectly square to the coin, thereby hinting at some possible distortion of the features due to the interesting things digital photography does to perspective. With that said, my informant's points are well made, I see precisely what he's talking about, and I am forced to express doubt as to the originality of this coin.

Let's have a dialogue about this one.

I had originally looked at it quickly late last night and felt that something was not quite right. The denticles on the obverse in spots look quite flat and not like what I am used to for a morgan. E Plurbius Unum and the stars didn't look right. They sort of look fatty and didn't look as crisp as they should be. As has already been mentioned, date especially the 3 didn't appear to have the correct style.
