I just bought an old ANACS photograde 1936 D/D graded MS 65/65. It's a really nice looking coin with luster and light toning, but the obverse might be a bit weak. Am considering sending it in for hopefully a confirmation of the MS65. When I look at other 65s, it seems the quality is all over the ball park. Some look much better than mine and some worse. My other option is to just do nothing. I'd like to resell it. If I had a decent photo I'd post it, but just don't have one at the moment. Thoughts?

Buffaloes are somewhat difficult to grade because the strike was so variable.
A weak strike may drop a Buff one grade but the key is to look for rubs on the coin.
For AU you'll see them at the cheek on the obverse and on the hip on the reverse.
For XF also look for rubs on the horn.

The hard part is that the horn can be complete but be a bit flat; that's often a strike problem, not a wear problem.
You need to look for luster breaks.

Hey thanks. Very helpful. Yeah, my horns are a bit flat like you said. That was worrisome to me. The luster looks really good though. I'll probably just keep it as is. Heck, it's already documented as an MS65. A 66 isn't worth much more anyway.

You could always send in it to PCGS with a minimum crossover grade. If it does not cross, they will leave it intact in the original holder.

It's actually not in a holder. It has a photo certificate from 1986. Really the best of both worlds......a certified coin that you can handle.

Good suggestion about the crossover. I wonder how it would work crossing over a photograde coin. I wonder if I could send them a copy of the certificate. Would hate to have to give up the original.

Any time you send in a coin it's a crapshoot.

As for sending in a copy of the certificate, they would just ignore that. Of course they would most likely ignore the original as well, but they won't return it either if they holder the coin.

Exactly. I think I'll take the MS65 and be happy
