Bad buys? Overpaying? Rough people to make deals with? Buying a fake? Coin-related regrets? Newbie mistakes? Etc?

What are some of the worst coin experiences you've had

EDIT: If you have more than one, share as many as you want.

Really can't think of any bad stories with coins. I keep away from ebay, on line dealers, etc. Buy most from coin shows so I see what I'm getting. Almost always get great deals or so I think so just never had a bad experience in almost 60 years of coin collecting.

well, the story that has always stuck in my craw happened about 1974 when I was 12. The closest coin shop was over 25 miles away and when I would get thereI would buy a few circulated wheat cents or low grade Indian cents. One dqy he had an 1877 Indian head marked as Good for $60. I may as well have 6 million, but I could dream.

Well a few days later my mother decided she would help my collection by nuying a series of "coins" the mint was putting out called America's first Medals. Agroup of 10 or 12 round things a little larger that a silver dollar made from some old cooking pot metal of some kind for around 100 dollars.

Well I begged her to buy the Indian cent instead as I collected coins not whatever those things were. Well as you can imagine the argument end with mother doing what she thought best and buying those things wich she assured me would be worth far more in the future that any little penny.

I still do not have an 1877. oh well.

When I was new to the hobby I went to the website of a private mint and I spent £30 (about 50 American dollars) on a "solid gold" coin.

The coin arrived and it was 8mm in diameter and weighed half a gram. As if that wasn't bad enough, it was only 9 carat gold.

Horrible experience. I still have the coin though.

My huge regret comes from when I spent an Isle of Man pound coin on sweets , it was a nice one with the cricket wickets, bats and helmet and considering how almost impossible it is to get one for face value , I doubt I will ever get one again ........alas ,anyway looking on the bright side coin collecting continues

--passing up a coin that I think is lame and looking it up on the internet just to see it being rare
--overpaying for coins that I found elsewhere later on for cheaper
--overpaying

Maybe not the worst story, but a bit of a missed opportunity - My friend an I were at a coin show while in high school, and looking through junk bins. We came to one that we couldn't both look into, so I handed him a little pile to look through beside the bin. One of the first ones he found was a Flying Eagle cent, which the dealer sold him for the advertised price - 20 cents!
I will admit that I was (am) happy for him, and I have seen that coin many times since.

I have a few of them. One that sticks out was purchasing a "junk drawer" lot on ebay with blurry pics and a description that included the phrase "silver included". I received a bunch of worn wheaties, a clad spoon, and something like a thimble or something. Moral of the story, scotch and late night bay trolling do not mix. My other bad experience was buying a "gem uncirculated" Peace dollar from Amazon. I think it was like $40 at the time. I received a polished Peace dollar with a lot of wear. Both of these purchases were made when I had just begun collecting, thankfully I have learned my lesson since.

Darn I went picking at a garage sale and first, I missed Civil War notes that have been cancelled, which is worth so much.

Then, I saw a huge world coin bucket priced at $50. Little did I know half of the coins in there are silver...
