i know that this is not a rare, or valuable find. I have found several from the 1950's - but the is about the newest (by year) BIE die break that I have found. the coin is in fairly nice condition.

i just though it was a fun find.

Die chiping happens on many years. Just depends on an event that starts the process and then it continues till retirement of the die. Then replaced with another die marriage of the remaining die.
Rest in Peace

Back in 1995 I was able to get a mint sewn bag from my bank and found a few in various stages. The newer the BIE the rarer they are. Unfortunately BIE's fell out of favor a long time ago.

That's too bad John - neat finds on modern, modern day coinage. It might make for an interesting post to see that progression!

i keep finds like this in a plastic coffe container, along with other minor errors, IE chips, clips, lamination errors, some Machine Doubling - etc.

wheither or not they are out of favor - isn't my criteria for keeping them. it takes little storage space, and very little expense - and I have some fund/interesting coins.

I'm glad you shared. I saw in a thread a few months back that later day BIEs were more uncommon and more valuable than the 50's BIE cents. I've a couple from the 50s and I'm always eyes open for a more current specimen. Glad to see someone got lucky!

Hi

Is anyone out there aware of any BIEs on 'any' coins, (new, old, US or non-US) that actually do bring a compelling additional premium worth holding on to for possible resale to interested parties?

i suppose that depends on what you define as "compelling". I have heard of fairly high grade 50's BIE errors selling for $4-$5. that seems to be compelling to me. percentage wise - if I could make that sort of profit margin on other investments - I would be pretty impressed.

The problem with collecting these is that the die chips are progressive. So in different ages of the die, the BIE appears differently. So when they realized it was a die issue and not a variety, most stopped collecting/attributing these.
