I found these two nickels in a bank rolls and they stood out strangely to me visually. I looked closer and the top part of the rim on both nickels were worn down and the letters looked mushy. What could had caused this? Mostly wondering if the damage happened at the mint or just wore like this for some reason.

The 83 looks like a mushy strike and both have some uneven wear. Nothing extraordinary.

Late die state on both coins. The 80s were notorious for coins with mushy details.

Very worn dies and possibly combined with a weak strike.
