This PL 1885 O Has something going on in the same position on both sides of the coin. Any Ideas? If its struck through it would happen only on one side right? Besides the dentils being flattened the rim and reeding don't show any other peculiarities.

I am thinking PMD.
The mashed-up denticles and letters in the part of the damage gives away the verdict to me.
And because the locations of the damage match up, I'd say that it was squeezed by a vise or something in that area.

My first thought was PMD as well, but the longer I look at your photos the more I wonder if it's a planchet problem.

wouldn't the denticles be completely flatted out if a vise would squeeze the coin so hard that parts of "PL" disappeard completely.

don't have an explanation on my own though...

Yeah, this one is kind of fun to look at. Haven't for sure decided what I'm looking at yet, but I'm looking.

OK, my vote is planchet. Both sides are weak; methinks it's a near-clip that just had sufficient metal to fill the collar but not enough to complete a strike.

Probably planchet, the planchet was probably cut close to the point where the strip started to taper and it was just a little thin right there.

I tend to think PMD. The dings in the rim on the Obverse, and the fact that the areas where the metal is missing is a different color and looks rubbed or something.

PMD was my first thought as it always is in these strange findings, But there is not any marks above or below the "line" if you will. And the reeding is perfect and the rest of the coin is in good shape , probably a 63 might make PL. The only thing that I can think of that would make a mark like this is if someone put the coin in a vise or something and squeezed it, but that would leave more marks on the rim if it was enough pressure to squish the dentils and remove tops of letters. And I would think and the Tops of the Letter would not just be totally gone. And besides, why would someone put a coin in a vise and squeeze it? To make it talk? Maybe it was at Gitmo and had some terrorist ties. Come to think of it I noticed a small piece of cloth in Liberty's mouth, evidence of waterboarding?
