I been thinking about saving up and buying them for my collection in next few years. I love them and think they cool since I used to own an 1990 no s proof set before. I hated selling it and I still regret it. I want to save up and buy them for my collection. I just got an copy of greysheat and been reading it. Its amazing some are cheap and some very expensive. Are there websites I can read about production numbers and the history on them since I love them so much. How many are out in the world . I tried searching the web and never found any history on them and why they came out the mint. When were they found and whats the history on them .
1968 was priced 12000 to 14500. Why so high compared to others.
1970 was priced 1050 to 1150 . You see price compared to 1968
1971 was priced 1350 to 1475 . It was nickel no s proof
1975 was priced at 37000 41000. Its the most expensive and how many have been found on those? This what I read it was show stopper and coin-world I think they wrote an story about it. I never seen the story in coin-world.
1983 was priced at 850 to 975 on that no s dime set. Its the lowest priced coin set out there.
1990. No s penny set was priced 4500 to 6500. They claim on ebay only 3550 were ever made but other people say on ebay onley 200 was ever made on those. Its confusing on those people saying 200 or 3550 made on those. Most the sets I have seen have spots on cent for whatever reason. Why did they spot up in those sets compared to other 1990 proof sets? Was something wrong with the pennys in there?

So where I can find more history and stuff about the famous no s proof sets? I heard the us mint used Philly dies to strike the proof coins when they made mistakes by not using the s coin dies for proof coins is why they were made. Am I correct or did s where off the die like in 1922 on there cents. I don't know the entire history or very much about the no s proof sets. Are there any more years becides greysheet or what I listed here.

I did learn on my 1990 no s penny proof set it could been taken apart and an Philly cent could have been replaced in there to remake it. My family had it years and we never knew it in-till this year my set could have been faked by using an Philly coin or no mint mark penny. I found out when I tryed to sell it. I thought they were tamper proof but I guess not. My cent was dull looking compared to an proof coin. I never knew for sure if came from mint or it was remade. Its history and its gone for good.

So how can I be safe when buying those sets for my collection on switched out remade sets . I need learn about them before I buy sets to keep in my collection. I never heard of companys such as pgcs puting them tamper proof slabs like they do coins to keep them safe. I am concerned on the dime sets people can polish or re-plate them make them proof like coins. Its like anything esle if money there it can faked or remade to make money. Are there companys out there to slab them as intire sets where you don't get the fakes like my grandfather may have bought years ago. It was nightmare selling my set serval monlths ago. I never want to go thru that ever again.

Like I said I want learn and save up to buy them for collection. There is little history on them on net after I tryed looking for them. Those sets are amazing to me and I love them.

Error proof coins are fantastic to collect. Unfortunately I couldn't afford too many of the sets you list. As for the 1990 proof set, I would only buy from a reputable dealer. Your wanting to learn more about these error proof sets is going to help, when you decide to purchase one.

Spider5689,

I know the best to buy them is from an reputable dealer . The big mystery to me is why prices vary on them . Some are cheap and the 1975 is very expensive. I seen serval of them on ebay over the last few monlths. Its seems they all tell an storey and the date of discovery and how many were made or found.
Example on the 1968 no s dime set. They claim first one was found in 1971 . His set had the discovery leter with it. Who wrote the discovery leter ?
1970 no s dime set they claim was found . They claim onley 200 was found in 1970 or early 1971 before it broke the news.
The other years I dont know anything about but the 1990 they claim onley 200 were made but pcgs website says they made 3550 in the prestige and maroon box sets. It strange since other sites say onley 200 were produced in that year.

Its seems there no iron clad production figures or there storys behind them vary from person to person. I wish I could find more history on them, claims of how many were ever found . Stuff like dates when they were found. The 1975 set is interesting to me since its highest price on them. It must mean the 1975 is very rare compared to others. I never found history website on them.

Your right I want learn about those no s proof sets since I think they are cool and I was thinking it would be cool to maybe build website behind the history on them since very little is known about them where colletors can read about them like I want to.

1. NOBODY knows how many of any of these were made. It could be that all of them have been found, and it could be that there are case lot boxes of them that have never been opened...and trust me...there are case lot boxes of unopened proof sets out there.

2. Their relative values are what they are beause of rarity. The 1975 set is one of the rarest of the bunch and commands the highest price.

3. Regarding purchasing them...you will be lucky to find them. Buy them from whomever you can find them from. If you want the 1971 set, I know a seller...trust me, it's not me and I have nothing to gain. I can put you in touch with him.

4. Rest assured that if you have a clue what you are doing it will be impossible to pull off a fake on you. Removing a mintmark from a proof coin is impossible to do without leaving a lot of evidence behind. Also, proof coins are MUCH harder to fake than business strike coins through casting, electrotype, or whatever. I would go so far as to say that ALL of the no-mintmark modern proofs out there are real, except for any obvious fakes that might be out there.
